How To Achieve Sobriety

Posted by – October 21, 2012

Sobriety simply means staying away from alcohol or any other substance that can cause problems in your life. It means that you do not drink alcohol or do drugs in your life. If you are suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol there are a number of ways that you can become sober as well.

Sobriety can only be achieved if you try your hardest and first get all harmful substances, drugs, and alcohol out of your system. Then you need to learn a new way of life as the influence of a substance was such a primary part of it.

Being sober to some people means that they will not be able to have any fun, and this is not true at all. You do not need alcohol or drugs to have a good time. There are plenty of ways to have fun without involving drugs or alcohol. This may sound like a bunch of fluffed up B.S., but this is a proven fact, with millions of sober individuals to testify, and many of them lived some wild lives.

If you know you are going to a party where there is alcohol involved, bring your own non-alcoholic beverages, or just avoid the temptation altogether. If you are trying to get over an addiction on your own, you need to keep yourself distracted from the substance you are addicted to.

It is a good idea to find a hobby that keeps your mind off of drugs, alcohol, and substance abuse. You could go to the gym and work out, read, write in a journal, sing your heart out, or anything else that will keep your mind distracted. If you fail to achieve sobriety on your own do not worry, there are people who can help you. In order to get over some addictions, you may have to look into treatment.

These types of treatment can be done at home, or you may have to go to a facility to get the help you need. If you have a job that you can’t leave, one possibility is outpatient treatment. This means that you talk to a counselor and take medication to help you get over your substance abuse if need be.

It can take months to achieve sobriety completely, so be ready for this journey. At the same time, some would say that it is a daily process that is not really ever over, but you will eventually reach a point where you want to remain sober more than you want to use. You want to try and stay happy and positive throughout your treatment.

counselingIf you have to go to a rehabilitation center for treatment, make sure that you follow all of the rules. You can actually get kicked out of rehab if you get in too many fights or do things you are not supposed to do.

You want to make sure that you talk to your counselor on a daily basis, or as is required, especially if you are having a rough time with your treatment and recovery. These counselors will be able to teach you how to keep a calm head and get through your treatment as fast as possible.

Many times people who are depressed will go back to drinking alcohol, doing drugs, or back to whatever type of substance abuse. If you keep a positive attitude and tell yourself everyday that you will succeed, then most of the time you will, because you’ll be willing to do what it takes.

It is a good idea to move in with a family member or a friend while you are going through treatment when possible and comfortable. Your family member or friend will be able to keep your mind distracted so that you will not go back and start into your addiction again.

The friend that you move in with should not have any alcohol, drugs, or any other type of addictive substance in their home. This way you will not be tempted to start your bad habit again, and you will be able to achieve sobriety. Recovery time for an addict can take from six months to a year or more, so make sure that you prepare yourself.

After you have finished your treatment and start into recovery, it is a good idea to become part of an Alcoholics Anonymous group; if you are not addicted to alcohol, there are similar groups for drug addicts and substance abuse cases.

These groups are filled with people who are going through the same problems that you are. They will more than likely understand what you are going through and you will be able to relate with them the most. This is a place where you can go to be yourself and not have to worry about people judging you.

Aftercare can last for a year or longer depending on how rough of a time you had with your addiction, and many people continue going for many years to stay sober and because they start to enjoy going. The best part is that most of the time these group meetings are free or of little cost to you. You will be able to relate with people who are struggling with the same types of addiction situations as you, and you will be able to make new friends.

In order to maintain sobriety, you will most likely need to change the people you hang out with. If the only people you hung out with were people addicted to the same substance you were addicted to ,then it might be time to make new friends. Staying sober will change your life forever. You will become a better person and have a better outlook on life in general, and have a chance to start a new life for yourself.
